Ned Hope, a writer of detective stories, takes his fiancée, Nancy Johnson, down to view his recent purchase, Fen Court, a neglected old house with three acres in the Essex marshes, bought for seven hundred and fifty pounds.

During their amble round the property, they little expected to discover in one of the four ornamental ponds, something that first appears to be a dead carp but closer inspection reveals it to be a submerged body. And then, shortly after, another two bodies are recovered...

A quirky and delightful read, The Essex Murders (1930), marked the debut of the dry-humoured policeman, Inspector Brews leading the investigation, ably assisted by amateur detectives Hope and his fiancée, Nancy.

Vernon Loder (1881-1938) was a pseudonym for John George Haslette Vahey, who also wrote as Henrietta Clandon, John Haslette, Anthony Lang, John Mowbray, Walter Proudfoot and George Varney.
