Simple Publishing Services
These are complete - but bare-bones - ways to get your book out now, affordably. I offer the service to help authors struggling, for whatever reason, to have their books see the light of day.
I'm not a full-service vanity publisher, self-publishing house or subvention publisher. It's just me assisting people to get their books available to the public. It started with friends' requests and I found I enjoyed helping - so I opened it up to others. There are many full-service companies out there who will do everything for you - if that's what you're looking for.
I'll charge £300 ($395 approx conversion) which covers my time. That's for any simple text-only work up to 80,000 words - and gets you kindle, paperback and hardback.
Right - the main market you need is Amazon. They have the ebook market almost to themselves and their paperbacks are good quality. I recommend sticking with them to see how your book does in the first instance.
I'm assuming you'll be sending me an MS finalised to your satisfaction. I always recommend getting a professional to do it - they're expensive but worth it. However, many authors start out doing it themselves or with help from friends. It's up to you.
Unfortunately I'm not a cover designer - so ideally you'll need to supply a cover. I can, however, point you to some great:
a) pre-made covers for around £35 (I'm not affiliated) for ebook; I'm sure you can find one that works. This is incredibly good value for professional work.
b) Outsource to a designer for a bespoke cover (ebook + paperback) for £200
c) If you need something simple and have your own image, I can probably help. I've done a lot of Oleander's covers if you want to check them out. I'll charge £75.
So, with those caveats, I can create your book as a Kindle ebook (mobi), paperback and/or hardback for Amazon.
You open your own Amazon kdp account - they give you a free ISBN and you upload the files. This way you keep track of all your sales and any royalties you may receive. This also enables you to order author copies at cost so you can sell them. (But remember - you can't sell those books through bookshops.)
You obviously get your Amazon page. You can link to that from your blog/facebook/Twitter etc.,
So that will get your book out there.
If you want to keep costs and effort down, I wouldn't bother about bookshop distribution at this stage. I know it would feel great to say your book's available in bookshops but they NEVER NEVER stock indies - unless you go in and persuade them. This means any customer would have to ask them to order it specially.
However - you can sign up to Ingramspark ($50 per book and you'll need your own ISBNs if not in the USA) and use these files - this will get your book available in bookshops around the world. It's printed on demand, locally, whenever a customer requests a bookshop order and it takes about a week to come in. Again, in my mind, at this stage it's simpler to go with Amazon (who'll despatch faster and free through Prime) until you see whether your labour of love goes down well with customers. If it does - then, by all means, pull out all the stops.
And finally - please remember that any sales will rely purely on your marketing efforts. Uploading it and putting it out there achieves nothing these days - the market is just too crowded.
Authors on Amazon can make money (sometimes, incredible money). If and when yours takes off... then you can investigate ways of expanding your reach.
I'd be delighted to help so, if you'd like to go ahead and order or just chat about this, message - or use the form below.
I look forward to helping you!
Jon
P.s. Doing it yourself is cheapest/free, doing the above is cheap but if, for any reason you are unable to do either, then I can simply publish your book for you as an Oleander title for £950 (Pre-made or my cover included). That gets you distribution everywhere but obviously, no marketing etc. Sales remain your responsibility.
