In Cambridgeshire: A History of Church and Parish, the renowned historian Professor Norman Pounds examines the development of the 150 parish churches in the county of Cambridgeshire. The book views the institution of the church 'from below', as an expression of the culture of everyday parishioners, rather than being concerned with high church politics. After exploring the relationship between parish and diocese, he describes what can be learned about the rectors and vicars that served. He discusses in detail the economic background within Cambridgeshire in order to answer the question of why one parish has a larger church than another. In the second part of the book, Prof. Pounds studies the ways in which the church building itself developed in terms of construction and cost, the building materials that were employed, and the furnishings that were used to decorate the church inside. The fabric of the churches, he argues, reflected the local popular culture and embodied the hopes and fears of the parishioners who built them. Norman Pounds is one of the leading historians and geographers in the world and is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Indiana University and Honorary Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. His numerous publications span 60 years and include his celebrated A History of the English Parish. Prof. Pounds is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and former President of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society. Maps, illustrations and photos throughout. |
