RETHINKING ROMAN HISTORY

Price: £9.95

Roman history is changing from the elitist discipline it used to be. Rethinking Roman History sets out to help this process by providing a textbook for anyone starting out as a Roman historian to help them think about what it is they are trying to achieve. It asks the question:

  • What is Roman history about?
  • What are its goals?
  • Is it best placed to achieve them within the discipline of Classics?

The book shows how the rules of Roman history are being rethought in terms of subject matter and the use of evidence. Roman history is focussing far more on the mass of Roman people rather than just a small elite. Dr Jerry Toner argues throughout that all historians need to be up-to-date with theoretical developments. He argues that history is moving from a post-modern to a neo-modern perspective where the notion of contingent truth can be applied. He also asks whether there is a process or a set of procedures that can be applied by historians to help them analyse the past in a clear and consistent manner.

Rethinking Roman History will be of immense value to all undergraduate and postgraduate students of both Roman and general history as well as to anyone interested in the future of Classics as a discipline.

Jerry Toner studied Classics at Cambridge University, completing his Ph.D. in 1993. His first book, Leisure and Ancient Rome, looked at the importance of activities such as gambling, bathing and drinking in Roman society. He has also published a logical and efficient approach to learning the Latin language, Latin Key Words, which lists the most common two thousand words in order of frequency, enabling the student to acquire a basic vocabulary in the shortest possible time.
